About the Latter Library Garden Conservancy
The Latter Library Garden Conservancy is a non profit formed in 2011 to landscape and maintain the grounds of the Milton H. Latter Library at 5120 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana. The goal is to maintain the gardens as a park for all to enjoy and enhance beautiful St. Charles Avenue. In 2011, a group of concerned New Orleanians formed the non-profit. The Conservancy’s mission is to design, implement and maintain the grounds of the library so that once again the site will be a beautiful venue for all to enjoy.
Today, the enhanced library surroundings provide a beautifully landscaped and irrigated park, with lush green space appropriate for events, both large and small. There are quiet, shady areas for reading and relaxing, such as the dedicated reading bench, Little Free Library, pergola, and oval garden. Included in the design are expansive lawns for concerts, book fairs, and movie nights! The camellia garden has become a favorite for wedding photos. Children are invited to listen to stories in a special are deer the vast American Elm tree. Many people enjoy picnics, leashed dog walks, book group meeting, and literary events, along with age old childhood pleasure of rolling down the sloping terraces on the new Latter Library grounds. As more and more people come to use the new green, landscaped space, upkeep will need to be ongoing. The support of the community is vital to sustain the landscaped park grounds of Latter for generations to come.
